The World Is in the Air Tonight

So it starts with a poem, a trail, a view, or just dumb luck with eyes open for those images, whatever images there may be. And if images can be used as shoes... well,
let's take a walk down the road and see what we see...

The World Is in the Air Tonight
(for all the Chumps Without a Chance)

Lying in the dark among dreams of old factories,
turning blue and rust in evening fog...
what is real is worthy of dream,
what is dream is worthy of life--

you will have heard the song
of the cuckoo in your head,
the song of the crow,
the song of the blue heart poured from the bottle
and turned into fire--
an old city under a gold sky,
a flat moon strangled in wires,
a mountain of salt
where darkness never falls--

the ballyhoo blooms every chance it takes,
a rush of voices,
a red bottle of dreams
off the street, off the bus,
ululating
exotic liturgies, decorated
tongue & ink,
sand and swipe of hands
laying bare the painting of wishes--

lo & behold a chump
without a chance.,
the world in the air,
a crumb
in old Hubbard’s shoe--

what is real is dream,
the catfish photographing your true heart,
the goatman banging your pans,
wake up and dream!... wake up and dream!...
clap your feathers and sing a song
wet your beak and sing-a-long!...
cook the crumbs
for the bums,
the world is in the air tonight--
cook the crumbs
for the bums,
the world
is in the air tonight—
